ASM 2009 Scholarship Awards

Since 2004, ASM has presented Scholarship Awards to deserving students from ASM member companies, using proceeds from ASM’s annual golf tournament. Thanks to the great success of the event, we were able to offer three awards this year, each at $2,000. From an outstanding pool of applicants, our Scholarship Committee selected Melanie Fontes of Mansfield, Max Goldstein of Needham, and Aislinn Shea of Worcester, to receive the 2009 Awards. We invite you to read more about them below. They have already achieved much at an early age, and we wish them success in pursuing their academic goals and life dreams.

 Melanie Fontes

A straight “A” student throughout her years at Mansfield High School, Melanie graduated with honors in 2009. She is the daughter of Jose Fontes, a long-time employee of ENE Systems, Inc.

During her high school years she consistently demonstrated a passion for learning, had a tendency to think “outside the box” and was valedictorian of her class. Additionally she was a reporter for the newspaper, a member of the debate club and served on the student advisory council. Melanie’s interest in law led her to joining the mock trial team.

A violinist for the past 8 years, Melanie was the co-founder of the Fiddle Club. Additionally she volunteered her time to work as a tutor in the Academic Learning Center, a program which places tutors with students throughout the district that are struggling to maintain good academic standing.

She remains interested in the law and has been accepted by Harvard University in their pre-law program.

Max Goldstein

Max is a 2009 graduate of Needham High School and is the son of Eric Goldstein an employee of C/F Data.

Max performed very well in high school scoring a 5/5 in the AP United States History Exam as well as having advanced MCAS scores making him Koplik eligible. Koplik recognizes high academic achievement in areas tested by MCAS, and recognizes high academic achievements as identified by outside forums, including competitions, student publications, and awards.

In the area of community service Max served as a Little League Coach, a Youth Wrestling Coach and raised over $500 dollars volunteering for the Pan Mass Challenge kids ride for the Jimmy Fund.

Max will be continuing his studies at Brandies University in the fall.

Aislinn Shea

A 2009 honors graduate of Worcester Academy, Aislinn Shea is the daughter of Francis Shea a Vice President of the Sullivan Insurance Group in Needham.

In high school she excelled in academics and maintained a full schedule of activities outside the classroom as well participating in Varsity Tennis, Field Hockey, Skiing, Basketball and Field Hockey.

As a volunteer she became involved with the Visitation House (a home for young mothers facing crisis pregnancies), Project Hope (a relief organization directly aiding and providing hope for victims of Hurricane Katrina) and Camp Sunshine (a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families).
